How Does Ocular Aesthetics Work?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a cutting-edge, non-invasive treatment that offers a dual benefit for both ocular health and aesthetic concerns. By delivering targeted pulses of light to the skin, IPL addresses the underlying causes of various conditions while also improving the appearance of the delicate skin around the eyes.

IPL Therapy is widely recognized for rejuvenating the skin, offering a radiant and youthful appearance. Whether you're looking to improve the appearance of sun spots, reduce redness, or minimize fine lines, IPL can help you achieve your aesthetic goals with minimal downtime.
How It Works
IPL uses a broad spectrum of light to penetrate the skin and target specific pigments, such as melanin (in age spots) and hemoglobin (in blood vessels). The light energy is absorbed by these targets and converted into heat. This heat damages the unwanted cells and triggers the body's natural healing process. For aesthetic concerns, this process breaks down the pigmented cells, which are then naturally cleared by the body, and stimulates the production of collagen, which improves skin texture and reduces fine lines.
For eye health, particularly with conditions like ocular rosacea, IPL targets the abnormal blood vessels around the eyelids. The heat from the light pulses closes these vessels, reducing inflammation and improving the function of the meibomian glands, which are crucial for producing the oily layer of your tear film.
What It Can Treat
IPL for ocular aesthetics can be used to address a variety of concerns, including:
-
Rosacea: By targeting the inflamed blood vessels, IPL can significantly reduce the redness and irritation associated with rosacea on the face and around the eyes.
-
Age Spots and Sun Damage: IPL breaks down the melanin clusters that cause brown spots and freckles, leading to a more even and radiant skin tone.
-
Hemangiomas: Certain types of vascular lesions, such as cherry hemangiomas, can be effectively treated with IPL by targeting the blood vessels that cause them.
-
Fine Lines and Wrinkles: The collagen-stimulating effect of IPL helps to improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
-
Chronic Dry Eye and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD): A key therapeutic benefit, IPL improves the function of the meibomian glands, leading to a more stable tear film and relief from dry eye symptoms.
The Procedure and Recovery
An IPL session is typically a quick and comfortable in-office procedure, often lasting just 15-30 minutes. Before treatment, a cooling gel is applied to the skin and protective eye shields are worn. The practitioner then uses a handheld device to deliver the light pulses to the targeted area. Most patients describe the sensation as a warm snap or a gentle rubber-band flick.
Recovery is minimal, with most people able to return to their daily activities immediately. You may experience some mild redness or swelling, which usually subsides within a few hours to a day. It is crucial to use sunscreen and avoid direct sun exposure after the treatment, as your skin will be more sensitive. A series of treatments is typically recommended for optimal and long-lasting results.
What Is The Cost Of OptiLight Treatments?
IPL for skin rejuvenation is typically not covered by most traditional insurance. We also accept Care Credit and FSA/HSAs.
